United Utilities .
United Utilities were experiencing some issues in tracking and tracing their field assets such as the pumps, chains, valves and motors in their stores and also out in the field at their waste water treatment sites. This resulted in many items being lost in the system, but also crucial maintenance schedules missed and items being scrapped. PCF were contracted to implement a web based system with a SQL database to capture all assets and the relevant details. United Utilities now have a fully operational application giving them access to details such as:

- Description
- Cost
- Location
- Maintenance period
- Safe Working Loads
- Current Location
- Picture of the asset
- And many more ……
Field Engineers are able to logon to the system remotely to locate the nearest depot holding the spares they need and are able to reserve them to prevent another Engineer taking it before they arrive to collect. They then book them out using a handheld scanner communicating over the 3G network, updating the database immediately.
There is a full suite of management reports with the system giving United Utilities all the information they require to run and maintain the spares for all their water treatment sites in the North West.
Case Study
A large Local Authority.
One of our Local Authority clients provides a secure cash collection and delivery facility to locations within the Authority and also to external private companies. Drivers go to the sites in secure vehicles and collect bags of cash which are returned to the vault and then onward transit to the bank, as well as making petty cash drops to some locations.
The existing system was paper based with drivers recording bag numbers on sheets and getting paper copy signatures in return – this was labour intensive and also prone to error. There was no easy way of reporting on the details and also no “concrete” proof of collection/delivery in cases of a dispute.
PCF implemented a secure barcode based tracking system whereby every cash bag has its own unique barcode number. Officers now use portable handheld devices and scan location codes, bag barcodes and user details on each transaction giving a receipt to the customer (printed from the device) and capturing a signature which is stored in the database against the transaction. The Authority now have a completely secure end to end electronic solution for tracking and tracing the cash – with a full audit trail which can be interrogated in the case of customer disputes.
